Title: Antiquitates Suffolcienses, by Sir Richard Gipps (1659-1708) copied for Sir Thomas Gery Cullum
Description:
Cullum used copyists in 1807 to make the transcript, paying one penny per folio of 80 words. The first copyist may have wanted more, for the hand changes after the first shilling's worth. The second, far better, copyist signs the bottom of fo. 81 'J. Packer scripsit'. Cullum's notes on Gipps, his Library and the work are interpolated. 152 numbered folios in the two volumes cover the transcript, and at the end of the second, Cullum fills the book with notes and indexes. In Volume 2, fo. 153 is the note, very tightly bound into the margin, 'The Arms & Quarterings of Book of Suffolk formerly the property of Sir Simon D'Ewes; afterwards of John Symonds Esqr LLD Recorder of Bury; & now (1808) of John Benjafield Esqr. (vide Lilly's Visitation).
