    • Landekey is in the hundred of Southmolton, but in the parish of Bisshop's Tawton, wch is in the hundred of Fremynton. This hath bine thauncient dwellinge of the name of Beapell, of wch I finde these : Reginald Beaupell, in Kinge Henry 2 tyme ; Richard his fonne ; Reginald his fonne ; Robert, fonne of Reginald; & Reginald, sonne of Robert, wch died anno 54 of Kinge Henry 3, wch had issue Sr Robert, wch had issue Sr Robert, wch had issue Sr Raph Beapell, wch by Elisabeth, sister & heire of Sr Raph Bloyhow, & widow of Stephan Tinten, had issue Marget, wief of Sr Nigel, [or Nele, Loringe, Knight, [& one of the founders of the orderj of the Garter, wch had issue Elisabeth, wief of Robert Lord Harrington, & Margt, wief of Thomas Peyner, unto whose part Landekey was allotted; they had issue Mary, wief of John Broughton, wch had issue John, wch by Elisabeth, daughter & heire of Robert Stonham, had issue John, wch by Anne, daughter & heire of John Denston, had issue Sr Robert, wch by Katerine, ye base daughter of John Vere, Erle of Oxford, had issue John, wch by Anne, daughter & heire of Guy Sapcots, had issue John, Katerine, wief of Willm Lord Howard, of Effingham, & Anne, wief of Sr Thomas *. The said Anne Sapcote took for her 2 husband, John Russel, Erle of Bedford, from whom therle of Bedford is descended. John Broughton died wthout issue. This land fell unto the porcyon of Katerine, wch had issue Agnes, wief of Willam Powlet, Marques of Winchester. The said Agnes Lady Marques gave this land unto Sr Thomas Dennys, wch had maried Anne her daughter, & Sr Thomas Dennys gave it unto Sir Henry Rolle, the younger, wth Anne his eldest daughter, wch had issue Dennys Rolle, the now lord of Landekey.

      Note:
      The information about Katherine being the base daughter of John de Vere almost certainly came from a descendant of her family. Sir William Pole, antiquary, was collecting information for a number of years but a lot was collected pre-1600 which was less than 100 years after Katherine died. It's quite feasible that a grandchild or great grandchild of Katherine told Sir William Pole that her father was John de Vere. Pole stated that he used as his sources "Records out of ye Towre, the Exchecquer & such deedes & evidences which in my searches I have founde".
