In Tranent Churchyard:
On a plain flat stone, set on two pillars, opposite the old Dovecot, is found an inscription which reads thus:
Weep not for us, our race is run,
It is the Lord, His will be done.
In Memory of
Patrick, Margaret, and William,
Sons and Daughter of William Bathgate,
Land Surveyor in Cockenzie,
Who are interred here, 1790.
The 1790 date has probably been mistranscribed, it is more likely to be 1796. Note that Burial/Death records for Tranent are blank between May 1620-March 1627, December 1627-1781, June 1787-1788, September 1789-April 1790, July 1790-March 1793, May 1793-December 1802.
