The 97th Regiment arrived in the Crimea, part of Ukraine, from Greece in November 1854. Attached to the Light Division, the Regiment first saw action in earnest when, under Captain Hedley Vicars, it helped repulse the great Russian sortie from Sevastopol on the night of 22nd March 1855. The regiment was a favourite of the well-known Crimean sutleress Mrs Mary 'Mother' Seacole, who knew the Regiment of old from when it was stationed on Jamaica.
The 97th Regiment were part of General Shirley's Brigade who took part in the second assault on the Redan, a fortress in Sevastopol, on 8th September 1855; the 97th suffered severely with casualties and William Parrin was listed as being slightly injured in the attack.
They were sent to Calcutta, India in August 1857, because of the Indian Mutiny.
William Parrin served with the Jaunpur Field Force in India and took part in the battle of Nusrutpore on 23rd January 1858, the battles of Chanda and Ameerapore on 19th February 1858, the battle of Sultanpore on 23rd February 1858 and the capture of Lucknow between 4th to 16th March 1858.
