223 | Notes from Graham Windsor - email received Sun 17/12/06 16:13 Clara married Fred Davies. They had one son Robert who was born probably around 1929. I was born in 1935 so I had some contact with Robert. He was a deep sleeper so Clara told once how she poured a bucket of water over his head and he still didn't wake up. I guess he must have been about 33 when he suddenly collapsed at work. Auntie Clara was marked for the rest of her life. They lived at, from memory, 167 Paulhan Street, off Lever Edge Lane, ...The said Fred Davies left Clara, and my parents never had any liking or respect for him, and I never recall meeting him for any length of time. He may have dropped in once or twice very briefly say about 1945... Clara was a noble soul, since she looked after Bertha so long... I remember also in 1955 when my mother despite her health was opening a shop on Derby Street (a curtain-making shop, at which she worked incessantly all day and all evening. It was a place where local women would stop for a chat and a cup of tea) Clara and I cleaned the whole place out, scrubbing etc. A real worker she was. | Windsor, Clara (I345)

234 | A short article, taken from TLHS Newsletter No. 94 (April 2017) The following document, written on parchment and enclosed in a bottle, was deposited in the brickwork of the foundations of Birtenshaw House when it was rebuilt in 1867:- On this spot there was erected, about three centuries ago, a dwelling house which, in the year 1624, was described as the Mansion House and Tenement of Birtenshaw, held from the Lord of the Manor, John Orrell Esq. of Turton Tower. Afterwards it became occupied by John Battersby, and from him descended to his grandchildren, of the family of the Ashworths, of Little Oaks. From that time to the present the above-named residence and tenement have remained in the occupation of the successive generations of the Ashworth families During the present year (1867) it was ascertained that the dilapidations of the house were very extensive, and of such a nature as to involve the necessity of rebuilding. The owner, George Binns Ashworth, son of Henry and Letitia Ashworth, having fully considered the requirings of comfort for his family, decided to have the ancient edifice before described, entirely taken down and destroyed, and he has erected on the same site the present more commodious and substantial dwelling. Signed by Henry Ashworth, Letitia Ashworth, George Binns Ashworth. Freeman and Cunliffe, Architects, Bolton | Battersby, John (I6157)
